Designing and delivering intercultural training - course outline
Pre-course tasks · To design a course outline for a one or two day course · To select or develop one training activity for the course
Day 1 - Course design · Revisiting the key cultural issues · Key elements of successful course design - examples and models · Review and critique of course design tasks with facilitator and peer feedback · Revision of course design tasks
Day 2 - Selecting and developing materials · Sources and types of materials and activities · Working with realia and other “authentic” materials · Creating your own activities and materials · Adjusting training activities to different learning styles · Review and critique of activities from pre-course task · Practical tasks to try out different kinds of activities
Day 3 - Delivering intercultural training · Training, facilitation and coaching – what works and why · Cognitive, experiential and emotional aspects of learning · Course participants as key intercultural learning resources · Establishing credibility as an intercultural trainer · Ensuring participants leave the training with practical “take aways” · Practical tasks to deliver different stages of intercultural courses
Day 4 - Course design workshop (optional) An opportunity to focus in more depth on the following areas: · Developing detailed course plans, outlines and “lesson plans” – building on the work of Day 1, or working on different course plans · Writing and presenting proposals for intercultural training courses
Day 5 - Materials and activities workshop (optional) · A chance to develop more course materials and activities, either individually or in sub-groups, under the guidance of LTS facilitators · Trying out and using materials and activities in micro-teaching sessions
